Wheeler Yuta is in the match of a lifetime tonight when he steps inside Blood And Guts on a special edition of Dynamite – but his mother won’t be watching.
The 25-year-old wrestler – who is a member of the Blackpool Combat Club alongside William Regal, Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley and – will be teaming up with Moxley, Claudio, Eddie Kingston, Santana and Ortiz tonight against Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Matt Menard, Angelo Parker, Daniel Garcia and Jake Hager.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Yuta admitted he won’t be letting his mum watch, and he has warned the action won’t be suitable for more sensitive audiences.
Asked if she’ll be tuning in, he laughed: ‘No, I would not recommend anyone’s mother watch. I would not recommend any kid under the age of 14 or so watch.
‘This one’s gonna get messy, this one’s gonna get violent and ugly – so viewer discretion is advised!’
Yuta wouldn’t let his mum watch his brutal bout with Moxley earlier this year, so it’s perhaps no surprise he’s told her not to tune in tonight.
However, she’s ‘always’ been supportive of his wrestling career, even if it’s taken her a while to warm up to watching some of it herself.
‘It’s funny, she was always supportive but she’d never watch wrestling or anything. Even if I was watching it, she would go into a different room and it would just be watching it,’ he said, reflecting on his early years watching as a kid.
‘But now, aside from the Moxley match, she has watched everything I’ve done in AEW. The real point where I was like, “now I know I’ve got her”, was my dad texted me while I was at Super Juniors and he was like, “We know you’re not on the show, but your mother is still watching just in case”
‘So she must enjoy it! But yeah, it’s been really cool to see her – I don’t know if I wanna call her a fan, but she’s a fan now! I think she’s a wrestling fan now! [laughs] It’s been really cool to see her come on this journey that I was on as a kid.’
He chucked: ‘She was always very supportive of the dream. I think she was always like, “Why don’t you be a doctor?” ‘
For Yuta though, there has never been any doubt in his mind that he’d be a professional wrestler one day – and now he’s doing just that for one of the biggest companies in the world for a global audience.
‘She was always very supportive of the dream. I think she was always like, “Why don’t you be a doctor,”‘ he smiled. [‘But] no, this was always [the dream]. My senior quote in my year book was, “Pro wrestling’s just a phase – Mom and Dad”.
It was always the thing I wanted to do. I don’t know what I would have done. Like, I have a psychology degree, but I don’t know what I would’ve done with it. I didn’t have any real plan with it.’
He beamed again, adding: ‘It was always, I’m just gonna go wrestle – and now I’m doing it!’
AEW Dynamite: Blood and Guts airs tonight (June 29) at 1am on Fite TV.
