A man has died after apparently being dragged along a subway platform when his clothing got trapped in a carriage door.

Marcus Bryant, 37, died on New York’s subway system when his trousers got stuck in the door, witnesses said.

They described how he was getting off the Q-train at Brooklyn Station when the accident happened, causing major trauma across his entire body.

However, the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) said he became stuck between the train and the platform before falling onto the tracks.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead around midnight on Wednesday.

Richard Davey, president of the New York City Transit, said: ‘We do not believe this was a door incident.

‘It was a tragic accident last night. Our hearts go out to the victim and his loved ones.

‘We’re also here to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again.’

Police said they will defer to the investigation led by the MTA, which said Mr Bryant was ‘caught between the train and platform and later fell into the pit, onto the tracks’.

A second train crossed the platform but it is unclear whether it struck Mr Bryant.

Station cameras were operational but the MTA has declined to release footage due to the ongoing investigation.

The tragedy comes amid safety concerns over the transport network, with at least two people dying after getting dragged by subway cars in New York in 2019, according to reports.
