A man died after he was shot while riding a New York City subway train on Sunday in what police have called an unprovoked attack.

Nearly 24 hours later, New York City police officers are still searching for the suspected gunman, who had been pacing in the last car of a Manhattan-bound Q train before launching his attack.

As the train cross over the Manhattan Bridge around 11.45am, the man pulled out a gun and ‘without provocation’ fired it at a passenger at close range, hitting in directly in the chest.

That passenger was identified as 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez, of Brooklyn. He was treated at the scene before being taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he later died.

When the train pulled in to the Canal Street station, the first Manhattan stop on the train line, the suspect fled, Corey said.

The gunman was described as a heavy-set man with dark skin and a beard. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white sneakers.

Police are reviewing security video to try and identify the gunman, who remains on the run Monday morning.

Witnesses aboard the train said they couldn’t recall any prior interaction between the gunman and the man he shot, New York City police said.

A single 9mm shell casing was recovered at the scene.

New Yorkers have been on edge with subway crime on the rise in recent months. Sunday’s attack comes one month after a man set off smoke grenades on a Brooklyn subway before shooting 10 people and injuring even more.

The man charged in that attack, Frank James, had posted videos online ranting about race, his mental health struggles, issues with New York City Mayor Eric Adams and his desire to commit violence.

Since taking office in January Mayor Adams has vowed to crack down on violent crime, both on subways and on the city streets.

The sister of the man who was on Sunday say the mayor has not done enough to ensure the protection of New Yorkers on the subway system.

‘I wish you guys would go back to Mayor Adams and tell him the city is not safe. My brother just became a statistic on the way to the city. He was shot at close range,’ Vile told the .

‘Do your job,’ her husband, Glen Vile, added. ‘Get crime off the streets.’
