A 22-year-old Michigan man has been convicted of murder and torture in the death of an 18-year-old woman who he shot — and then recorded himself kicking for nearly 11 minutes until she died.
In February of 2021, Andrew Lafey shot Gracyn Brickley twice with a .22 caliber rifle, then used his cellphone to film a nearly 11-minute-long video of himself kicking and stomping on her until she died, law enforcement in Barr County said.
Lafey then buried her body under a pile snow in the backyard of a home, reported.
The 22-year-old then went inside the home and showed the video to his friends and his father. The next morning his father reported him to local police and he was arrested.
Lafey was convicted Friday on numerous charges, including first-degree pre-meditated felony murder, which carries a maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole, several counts of felony firearm possession and torture.
Barry County Prosecutor Julie Nakfoor Pratt described the gruesome details of Brickley’s death to the court.
‘The circumstances of Grace Brickley’s death were horrific,’ Pratt said. ‘The Defendant video taped himself stomping on and taunting Grace Brickley for close to 11 minutes. The torture seen in the video came after Lafey shot Grace Brickley twice and inflicted multiple injuries to her face and breaking her jaw.’
Lafey waived his right to a jury trial and Judge Michael Schipper handled the trial and viewed and listened to evidence.
‘We would like to thank Detective Sgt Janette Maki for her thorough investigation,’ Pratt wrote in a statement. ‘The convictions stem from the February 16, 2021 torture and murder of Gracyn-Michael-Kay-Candace Brickley.’
‘We are pleased with the verdict and that justice for Grace Brickley and her family was served,’ the Barry County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
Lafey is scheduled to be sentenced on June 9.
