A Texas teacher who played a high-pitched ringing noise to punish her students was fired on Tuesday.
Last month, the teacher reportedly played a ‘dog whistle’ video off of YouTube, using the shrill noise that could only be heard by younger ears to discipline her middle school students.
The unnamed teacher, who had been under investigation after a student reported the incident to police, was officially let go by the district on Tuesday, .
The Community Independent School District said in a statement that ‘district police are conducting an investigation into the alleged incident,’ but some parents are still not satisfied.
A parent whose daughter suffers from migraines told she hopes the former teacher will be held accountable for the suffering she caused her students.
‘I would understand if the teacher used it for a split second to gain the attention of the class, but not for the excess of 40 minutes. Not when kids are begging you to stop,’ said Janice Lohrs, whose daughter Zoey has high sensitivity to high-frequency noises.
Janice said her daughter’s sensitivity to high-frequency noises was documented at the school and both the administrators and teacher knew of the issue before the teacher decided to utilize the dog whistle as punishment.
‘She put on the ringing noise everyone was covering their ears. One of them walked out of the classroom, one of them was yelling that it was torture and one was trying to unplug the computer,’ said Zoey Lohrs.
Zoey’s mother says she just hopes the former teacher is held responsible for the way she treated her students.
‘I would really like her held accountable for her actions, this is not OK. You have my kid for eight hours a day. It’s supposed to be a safe place,’ said Janice.
Community ISD said it was ‘possible’ that the former educator would face criminal charges, pending investigation.
‘The District will cooperate fully with local law enforcement agencies and the legal process. While CISD wants to be as open and honest as possible, we cannot comment further on this matter until the ongoing investigation has been concluded,’ the district said in a statement.
