Former striker and current England coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has no complaints over the sacking of , saying the poor results warranted his dismissal.
Potter’s stint at Stamford Bridge lasted just under seven months and produced just 12 wins in 31 matches, along with eight draws and 11 defeats.
The latest of those losses came on Saturday when left west with a 2-0 win and sealed Potter’s fate, with the Chelsea board wielding the axe on Sunday.
Chelsea are still in the Champions League, with a huge quarter-final tie against Real Madrid to come, but with the Blues 11th in the Premier League table, Potter could not survive.
Hasselbaink is not surprised that the Englishman has departed, recognising that no manager can last long when results have been so disappointing.
‘When you’re at a big club in the Premier League you need to deliver the results, and the results have not been there,’ the Dutchman told Sky Sports.
‘I was okay with the appointment of Potter, it just didn’t work out.
‘He came in September, had lots of problems because of injuries and he couldn’t really get them going.
‘You know what is going to happen when you don’t win matches, there’s only so long before they’re going to make a change.’
While Hasselbaink is not surprised by the sacking, and feels the results warranted it, he had called for Potter to stay immediately after the Villa game.
‘You’ve made a decision of going with young players, so you have to give them the time to make mistakes and get it right,’ he said.
‘You have to give them the time, otherwise they are never going to be the final product if they don’t go through this period.
‘And you have made the decision to go for Potter. At the moment they are in a difficult time, but I feel you have to stick with him. You have gone with young players and Potter, stick with the project.’
