Christian Eriksen has revealed he turned down interest from Tottenham and Brentford because he felt a move to offered him ‘redepmtion’ from what he’s experienced in the last 15 months.
The Dane signed a three-year deal with United in July, despite heavy interest from other clubs in the Premier League.
Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2021 and his contract at Inter Milan was terminated because Serie A does not allow players to play with a Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD).
There was no guarantee that Eriksen would play again and Brentford took a gamble in signing the playmaker last January.
Eriksen thrived in north London and the Bees were keen on signing him on a long-term deal, after his initial six-month deal expired.
Spurs, Eriksen’s former club, were also interested with Antonio Conte confirming last season that he was keen on signing the Dane.
But Eriksen says the lure of signing for ‘one of the biggest clubs in the world’
‘It is one of the biggest clubs in the world,’ said Eriksen.
‘It was a redemption after what had happened earlier, and like proving that you could get an offer from United. It was great. It’s a huge club I’ve joined. I had enough [opportunities]. I had enough options to choose from, but it was all about finding the right one.
‘Of course, Brentford wanted me to stay but I would say where I am in my career, I had the opportunity to step up to what I had dreamed of and hoped for.
‘I wanted to kick-start my career by coming to an even bigger address [club], and I succeeded.’
Eriksen has been a success at Old Trafford since his arrival and he was awarded Man of the Match in the side’s 3-1 win against Arsenal in the side’s last match.
The Dane provided an assist for United’s third goal and eye-catching passes for the first and second goals.
