Gary Neville has advised Harry Maguire to see a psychologist to help him recover his best form, because it was something that helped him during his own career.

Maguire is going through a tough time in his career, having been dropped by manager Erik ten Hag and facing criticism as England boss Gareth Southgate sticks by him in the national team.

The 29-year-old is now having to deal with a thigh injury he picked up during the 3-3 draw with Germany on Monday night and faces two weeks out of contention for the Red Devils.

Maguire’s confidence appears to be at a seriously low ebb and Neville says that seeking psychological help would be a positive step for the centre-back.

The former Manchester United and England defender says every player will sympathise with a loss of confidence and seeing a psychologist helped when he experienced it during his playing days.

‘I’ve been there,’ said Neville. ‘Every player has. When I lost my confidence, I saw a psychologist to help me through those moments.

‘But there’s nothing you can do other than show up, try your best and not give in.

‘At some point, his form will return. I would suggest he does what I did. I did go and see my doctor at Manchester United. I did go and see a psychologist. You do need external help at times.’

Maguire started both England games over the international break, but will be unfit to play at least the next three Manchester United fixtures.

England’s next fixture is their opening World Cup group game against Iran on 21 November and Southgate will be desperate for his centre-back to have regained form and confidence by then, whether he takes Neville’s advice or not.
