Jamie Carragher believes that Roberto Firmino and James Milner should not be starting for Liverpool anymore and has named a string of younger players who should be in the team to end the current slump in form.
’s side have won just two of their seven games so far this season and started their campaign disastrously last week.
A 4-1 defeat to Napoli in Italy caused Klopp to describe it as the worst performance he has seen since he took over at Anfield seven years ago.
‘It was a real horror show. It was the worst game we played since I have been here,’ said the German.
Both Milner and Firmino started that game in Naples, with the Englishman now 36 and the Brazilian only 30 but into the last year of his contract.
Club legend Carragher believes seeing these names in the starting line-up this season has been part of Liverpool’s problem and Klopp needs to unleash his younger, more energetic players to help improve things.
The former England defender recognises that they have been playing partly due to injuries and to balance the side, but he says there is an ‘obvious way to go’ to make things better.
‘When I see James Milner and Roberto Firmino starting big games for Liverpool in the Premier League or Europe, it is symptomatic of the problem,’ Carragher wrote for .
‘Liverpool’s squad includes enough players who can provide the dynamism off the ball that typied the first incarnation of Klopp’s side; Nunez, Jota, Luis Diaz, , Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are attacking upgrades on what Klopp inherited in October 2015.
‘The obvious problem is they all prefer to operate in the final third and there are inevitable dangers to the team’s balance if too many are included in the same starting XI.
‘However, for Klopp’s high pressing system to work, it needs their energy. That is the most obvious way to go, short-term at least, to make his ideas work again.’
