The 37-year-old is leaving Anfield after eight years with the club but he has no thoughts of retirement just yet and is set to extend his stay in the top flight.

While it is a significant move in terms of geography for Milner, the Seagulls are in an exciting time in their history and on course to qualify for Europe for the first time ever under Roberto De Zerbi.

Leeds will not be able to offer that kind of excitement, but they may be able to pull on the heartstrings of the versatile midfielder, by offering him a return to his first club, which the report they are keen to do.

Milner began his footballing career at Leeds way back in 1996 and made his Premier League debut for them in 2002 aged just 16.

He left for Newcastle in 2004 and a return 19 years later would be an amazing story, but it will likely depend on their Premier League status.

The Yorkshire club are part of a fierce relegation battle and have tasked Sam Allardyce with keeping them in the top flight.

With two games to play they are 18th on 31 points, one point behind Everton and three behind Nottingham Forest, with Leicester also scrapping away in 19th on 30 points.

Leeds’ remaining two games are against West Ham and Tottenham and must hope either Everton stumble against Wolves or Bournemouth or Forest slip up twice against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

Relegation to the Championship would likely end any hopes of signing Milner, with Europe-bound Brighton keen on him.
