Stanley Eguma’s side maintained their seven-point advantage over second- placed Plateau United following the win.
Chijoke Akuneto opened scoring for Stanley Eguma’s side in the 21st minute after an error by Samuel Akpan.
The hosts rallied back with Edidiong Ezekiel equalising six minutes later.
Ezekiel gave his side the lead for the first time in the game in the 48th minute.
Substitute Malachy Ohawume equalised for Rivers United eight minutes from time.
Ohawume then fired home the winning goal for Rivers United on the stroke of 90 minutes.
At the New Jos Stadium, Jos, Plateau United kept pressure on leaders Rivers United with a comprehensive 4-0 drubbing of Rangers.
Mohammed Zulkifilu scored from the penalty spot on ninth minute to put the hosts in the lead.
Philip Asiegbu missed the chance to equalise for the visitors on 26th minute when his penalty was saved by Suraj Ayeleso.
Zulkifilu punished Rangers’ unorganized defence, scoring the second goal from close range in the 37th minute.
Chimezie Izuchukwu scrambled in the third goal in the 65th minute, after keeper Seidu Mutawakilu failed to clear Daniel Itodo’s long throw-in.
The home team added the fourth goal through Sunday Anthony 13 minutes from time.

Samuel Onukwube gave Enyimba the lead a minute before the break .
Sunday Okereke however equalised for Nasarawa United four minutes after the break, while Enyimba regained the lead through Chukwuemeka Obioma in the 52nd minute.

Holders Akwa United fell to a 1-0 defeat to Kwara United with Samad Kadiri scoring the winning goal from the spot on 38 minutes.
In Okigwe, Heartland defeated Shooting Stars 3-1.
Gafar Olafimihan put 3SC in front of the spot on seven minutes, but Heartland rallied back to win the tie through Chukwudi Nwaodu, Adewole Adeniji and Murphy Ndukwu.
